History

Your neighbor since 1879.

For more than 146 years, Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph has walked alongside our neighbors through life's challenges and opportunities. What began with a simple act of compassion has grown into a mission that continues to provide help and create hope across northwest and western Missouri.

In 1879, Father Bernard Donnelly opened Mount St. Bernard's Orphanage in Kansas City.

His vision was simple: ensure that children and families facing hardship had a place to turn for support, care, and hope. Over the years, that commitment expanded beyond one orphanage to include services for children, parents, older adults, veterans, and families throughout our communities. While the needs of our neighbors have changed, our mission has remained the same: to walk alongside people with dignity, compassion, and respect.

A Legacy of Care

1879-1909

Our story began with services for children, young mothers, and older adults. During these early years, Catholic social service organizations opened their doors to anyone in need, regardless of faith background. Thousands of individuals received shelter, care, and support.

1927

Several Catholic social service agencies in Kansas City came together to form the Catholic Welfare Bureau, creating a stronger network of support for children, families, and young people involved in the juvenile justice system.

1935-1945

As communities faced the challenges of the Great Depression and World War II, services expanded to meet changing needs. Food programs, foster care, family services, employment support, housing assistance, and counseling became important ways of supporting neighbors during uncertain times.

As communities continued to grow and change, so did Catholic Charities. New programs were created to support refugees, individuals reentering the community after incarceration, families seeking housing stability, and neighbors looking to build brighter futures.

1964

As the nation focused greater attention on poverty, the agency expanded its partnerships and services. In 1967, the organization became known as Catholic Family and Community Services, reflecting its growing role in supporting children, families, and communities.

Rashey Moten became Executive Director, becoming the first African American to lead a Catholic Charities organization. His leadership strengthened the agency's commitment to providing direct support and practical services to people facing hardship.

1977-1980

As services expanded into northwest Missouri, the organization became Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph, a name that reflects the communities we continue to serve today.

Continuing the Mission Today

Today, Catholic Charities continues to provide support that meets both immediate and long-term needs.

Our programs help neighbors access food, housing support, family services, workforce development, veteran services, pregnancy support, and other resources that help people thrive.

Every day, we meet neighbors where they are. Sometimes that starts with a meal, a conversation, or a helping hand. Together, we work toward lasting stability, stronger families, and brighter futures.

While our programs have changed over the years, one thing remains constant: our belief that everyone deserves a neighbor.
