Fall is here- harvest time, crisp apples, pumpkin spice everywhere, and it’s also the month with the most birthdays! My own family illustrates this perfectly: between in-laws, a niece, a grandchild, and myself, we have six birthdays this month. These little joys are just some of the reasons this time of year feels special.

But September is also a more somber month. It is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month (or Suicide Awareness Month). While statistics about suicide are often cited, the most important number to remember is 988- the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This line offers listening, support, and resources to anyone in need.

Here are some practical steps for those of us who are not mental health professionals:

  • Ask the tough question: “Are you considering suicide?”

  • Listen: Listen without judgment.

  • Offer support: Don’t forget to share the 988 resource.

  • Make a safety plan with the person if possible.

  • Stay in touch: Regular connection matters.

These are just the key touchpoints; you can find more detailed guidance through the links below.

Today, as I write this, the Catholic Church celebrates St. Mary’s birthday. Mary is the universal mother, and in times of trouble, I turn to her in prayer. While spiritual support isn’t listed in the links below, it can be a source of comfort.
