At Catholic Charities of Kansas City– St. Joseph, we believe that every child deserves a safe, loving home, especially older youth who are at risk of aging out of foster care without the support of a permanent family.
You Don’t Need to Be Perfect- Just Willing
Many people hesitate to consider adoption because they fear they’re not “perfect” enough. But the truth is, children, especially older youth, aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for someone who cares. Someone who shows up. Someone who wants to help them thrive.

What Is Older Youth Adoption?
Older youth adoption typically involves children aged 8 and up, or younger children who are part of a sibling group. These children have often experienced trauma, loss, or instability, and they need families who are trauma-informed and ready to offer consistent love and support.
Unlike infant adoption, there is no placement fee for older youth adoption. Families must reside in Missouri and meet specific criteria, including:
- A current home study by a licensed Missouri child placing agency, like Catholic Charities of Kansas City- St. Joseph
- Completion of required training
- A realistic understanding of the needs of children in foster care
- A commitment to working with a licensed agency for at least 90 days
Support Makes a Difference
Adopting an older youth comes with a range of supports to help families succeed:
- Child Subsidy: Includes maintenance payments, daycare assistance, legal fees, and MO HealthNet coverage until the child turns 18.
- Post-Placement Services: Catholic Charities provides monthly contact, home visits, court reports, and appearances.
- Respite Care: Temporary relief for adoptive families when needed.
- Ongoing Case Management: Support continues even after finalization, helping families navigate challenges and connect with resources.
The Cost of Caring
While there are some fees associated with older youth adoption, such as home study and post-placement supervision; many costs are offset by subsidies and support services. And most importantly, the emotional return is immeasurable.
