The gift of sight is something many of us take for granted, but it can be life-changing for those who struggle to see clearly.

At Catholic Charities, we’ve witnessed firsthand how a simple pair of eyeglasses can open up a whole new world. In partnership with the Lions Clubs of America, we support their mission to bring hope through vision. By providing space and collecting donated glasses, we help make their free eye clinics possible; clinics that serve neighbors in desperate need of visual support.

Last year, I had the privilege of volunteering at one of these clinics hosted at our agency. The joy was unmistakable. As the glasses were carefully fitted, clients beamed with gratitude. Their smiles and their new glasses were contagious.

I know that joy because I’ve lived it.

I still remember the first time I put on glasses at age 4. I was riding home in the car, stunned by what I could finally see:

“I can see the leaves,” I told my mom.

That night at dinner, I quietly studied each of my family members. When my dad asked what I thought of my glasses, I replied,

“You aren’t blurry anymore.”

He chuckled, not realizing how much I’d been missing. Suddenly, my world had sharp edges, details, color, life.

Over the years, glasses became a staple, then contact lenses in my teens, and back to glasses again as my eyes changed. In 2020, eye irritation from contacts led me to full-time glasses again. And then in April, what I thought would be a routine eye exam turned into something much more: I had “ripe cataracts.” Surgery was needed, but the silver lining? A chance to live without glasses. I’ve never been so excited for a procedure. Thanks to modern advancements in eye health, I now see without any visual aid, a first in my life.

“I haven’t stopped grinning about my new sight,” someone recently told me.

The miracle of modern medicine has given me more than clearer vision. It has given me a renewed outlook, a lighter spirit, and a sense of deep gratitude.

That’s why I’m passionate about our work with the Lions Club. A pair of glasses might not solve every problem, but for someone struggling to see, they’re not a luxury- they’re a lifeline.

We will be hosting another eye clinic in August, and it’s not just a chance to serve, it’s a powerful volunteer opportunity that fills the heart.

I recently donated seven pairs of glasses to the Lions Club box at our main office. I hope they find new homes with someone whose world will be brightened by clear vision, just as mine was.
