It’s been just over one month since I joined Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph as the digital/social media coordinator. Following my Catholic faith has brought me from Benedictine College, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communication, to working for a well-known Catholic author, Matthew Kelly, at Dynamic Catholic in Erlanger, Ky.
Dynamic Catholic’s mission is to help people rediscover the genius of Catholicism. I relished working in that environment alongside others committed to the cause. However, Kentucky is a long way from Kansas City, and I eventually grew homesick. As I searched for job openings back here, I wondered if I’d ever find a position enabling me to draw upon my education and faith in the same manner. That’s when I stumbled across the ad for this role.
Since settling in, I have taken to heart the message delivered by Pope Francis on World Day of Social Communications, January 24: The internet, while so often used for harm, provides the “opportunity to share stories and experiences of beauty or suffering that are physically distant from us, in order to pray together and together seek out the good, to rediscover what unites us.”
The people Catholic Charities helps every day are part of the body of Christ. Although their stories of failure and success may be distant from our own everyday lives, spiritually, they are united to us. Through social media I want to bring these stories to you, to make you aware of our impact, to move beyond mere acquaintances so that you know exactly what we do and where those in need can access us.
