Lent: A Call to Action
Many of us remember our school days before Lent, comparing with classmates what we planned to give up—candy, soda, or maybe even fighting with siblings (a parent-inspired choice, no doubt). But did these sacrifices really help us grow closer to Jesus and understand His suffering?
As adults, we often view Lent as a time to give up a vice or a personal struggle. But are we doing it to grow in faith, or just to prove we have the willpower to endure? Is that what Lenten sacrifice is truly about—or could it be something more?
I once gave up coffee for Lent. It was brutal. Not only did I suffer, but so did my family and friends. I might have even lost a friend that season! But in the end, that sacrifice didn’t bring me closer to God—it just made me (and everyone around me) miserable.
Lent isn’t about spreading suffering; it’s about spiritual transformation. Matthew 6:16-18 reminds us not to put on a show of suffering when we fast, but to let God see the good we do in private.

A Different Approach: The Spiritual Works of Mercy
This Lent, instead of just giving something up, consider practicing the Spiritual Works of Mercy to grow in faith while bringing comfort to others:
- Counsel the doubtful
- Instruct the ignorant
- Admonish sinners
- Comfort the sorrowful
- Forgive injuries
- Bear wrongs patiently
- Pray for the living and the dead
It may seem overwhelming, but small acts make a big impact. For practical ways to live out these works of mercy, check out this resource:
