I have learned a lot about a structure’s support from regularly watching HGTV. However, this doesn’t qualify me to act as a construction advisor on a project. That said, I’ve picked up some key points about structural support during remodeling projects. For example, a load-bearing wall does exactly what its name implies: it bears the load of the structure. To address the removal or modification of such walls, a common solution is installing a support beam to carry the weight. Structural support is critical to the longevity of any building. A support wall or beam may need to be reinforced to ensure stability. Watching HGTV, I’ve often seen homeowners weighing the costs of structural support against their design preferences, sometimes needing to pivot their plans to ensure safety. A well-constructed structure can stand the test of time and provide a refuge in life’s storms.

Similarly, humans often carry unexpected burdens and find themselves in figurative storms without adequate support. These challenges can arise suddenly or build slowly over time. When faced with such difficulties, retreating from society in shame is not the solution. Seeking support to weather the storm is the better choice. From watching HGTV, I learned that installing a support beam is not a one-person job—it requires teamwork. Life is no different; why face challenges alone when help is available?

Support can be found through the Parish Mental Health Ministry, which offers a variety of programs. For example, the Stigma program is scheduled for January 22nd at St. John La Lande at 6:30 pm. Ongoing programs include the Mom’s Support Group at St. Regis and the God is Here Holy Listening Group at Holy Family, which focuses on spiritual and mental health support. Grief support groups are also starting soon—stay tuned for updates on these valuable resources. For more information, visit https://catholiccharities-kcsj.org/mentalhealthministry/.

HGTV might have inspired me to think about support structures, but there is a support system mightier than any physical framework. Jesus didn’t face life’s challenges alone; he gathered apostles and disciples as his support team. While he provided guidance and answers, they supported his mission. This divine framework has stood the test of time and weathered countless storms.

Just as Jesus didn’t do it alone, we shouldn’t believe we can either. Jesus and the Church serve as my support beam. Through prayers, services, and assistance, help is always available for those who seek it. Please explore our programs and find the support you need.
